THE FIRST GEAR
The First Gear was a five-piece Yorkshire band: Dave Walton (vocals), Phil Birkenshaw (guitar, vocals), Michael Ryal (bass, vocals), Raymond Wafer (guitar), and Ian Colling (drums).
Their version of “The ‘In’ Crowd” is one of many singles often questioned for its guitar soloist, and here the virtuoso is Jimmy Page.
It’s indisputable that Page is the lead guitarist on “Leave My Kitten Alone,” the blazing B-side to the band’s first single, “A Certain Girl.”
His solo on “Leave My Kitten Alone” is frequently mentioned as one of his greatest ever—crafted impromptu, right after he acquired his Gibson Les Paul “Black Beauty.”
Bandmate Dave Walton recalled: “Jimmy strapped on his Gibson, and we played it on the spot—his lead break was fantastically fast and one of the best ever.”
Shel Talmy, who regularly used Page’s talents on Pye and Immediate sessions, produced all four tracks for The First Gear.
The inclusion of "A Certain Girl", "Leave My Kitten Alone", “The ‘In’ Crowd”, and “Gotta Make Their Future Bright” on the Jimmy Page – Hip Young Guitar Slinger anthology confirms Page’s session presence.
These recordings display the powerful mix of Merseybeat and hard-rocking guitar that defined the era, and remain prized for Page’s electrifying session work.
