CARTOONE
If it wasn’t for the credited appearance of Jimmy Page, there is more than a doubt that anyone would have even heard of this band.
Cartoone was a Scottish group that recorded their self-titled debut album in London, released by Atlantic Records in January 1969—several months before Led Zeppelin’s own debut on the label.
The American release was heavily promoted, and the LP sleeve read: "This remarkable album by four boys from England (Formerly Scotland)..."
Jimmy Page is officially credited and plays on three tracks: “I’ll Stay”, “A Penny For The Sun,” and “Knick Knack Man.”
He also appears on “Reflections On A Common Theme,” a song released only as the A-side of an American promo single (Atlantic 45-2630).
Page’s contribution—both electric and acoustic guitar—gives these tracks a distinctive tone not found elsewhere on the album.
The connection between Cartoone and Page came just as Led Zeppelin was forming, and Cartoone would later open for Zeppelin on a US tour in 1969.
The original album, reissued with bonus tracks and detailed liner notes, stands as a sought-after collector rarity today, valued largely for Jimmy Page’s appearances.
