MALCOLM AUSTIN & THE WHIRLWINDS
An obscure rock’n’roll band from Epsom, Surrey, featuring future Led Zeppelin founder Jimmy Page, who was just 16 and attending Epsom Art College in 1960.
The lineup included Malcolm Austin (vocals), Stuart Cockett (rhythm guitar), Tony Busson (bass), and a drummer named Tom.
Local musicians regularly met up for ‘jam’ sessions, inspired by the guitarists and groups of the time, and the Whirlwinds only played a couple of gigs in Epsom.
Page, who played a Futurama Grazioso guitar, was already in demand by other musicians and soon moved on to backing Neil Christian, Eden Kane, prior to becoming a prolific session man.
