BEN CARRUTHERS & THE DEEP

Ben Carruthers, American actor (and friend of Bob Dylan), collaborated with the British group The Deep (with Jimmy Page on guitar) to record the UK single “Jack O’ Diamonds” in June 1965. The song set a Dylan poem to music and was released on Parlophone R 5295, but was quickly withdrawn due to lack of publishing permission from Dylan.

The B-side was “Right Behind You.”

Jimmy Page played guitar on the session, lending a distinctive folk-rock and psychedelic sound that makes the single highly prized by collectors of Dylan rarities and early Page recordings.

“Jack O’ Diamonds” remains a sought-after “withdrawn” single from 1960s British pop, notable both for its connection to Dylan and for featuring Page in a rare soloist role just before the surge of his session and Yardbirds fame.
